The first day of Spring this year was March 20…hard to believe that it was almost a month ago!
What does the Bible say about Spring? This season is a time of warming weather and nature coming back to life. As flowers bloom and animals are born, we are reminded of the innocence and beauty that exists in this world, and that there is new life all around us. As Christians, we are given new life and new mercies every morning. Spring provides a wonderful reminder to us that we should be living a full life and leaving the old dead parts of life behind. There is always hope during the coldest, darkest winters of life. Spring will come and new life will burst forth!
Did you smile when you saw the first flower of Spring…like a beautiful crocus or a lone blue bonnet? Have you wondered how the spring flowers know when it is finally time to end their long sleep over the winter?
Maybe they noticed that the ground around them was no longer frozen; or maybe the sun’s warming was felt when the temperature rose into the 60s and edged close to the 70s. Perhaps they heard the songs of birds singing and announcing that Spring had arrived, and that it was time for the world to awaken again. Or, maybe the roots of the trees, with their own limbs budding, announced it was now safe to come out!
Breathing in the fresh air of Spring and noticing such new growth and the beauty of a budding world of flowers, grass, trees, etc. can’t help but bring a smile to one’s face.
Soon these first flowers of Spring will be joined by other blue bonnets, clematis, buttercups, tulips, daffodils, and yes, dandelions. The air will be full of butterflies dancing above them all. The meadows will be full of growing grass, and the trees will display their bright, green leaves. The world will once again be alive with the glory of God’s creation.
Remember, we are a part of God’s creation; yet, unlike the flowers in the field we have the ability to bloom even when the world around us is cold, dark, and harsh. We can share beauty in the face of ugliness, our joy in the face of fear, and our love in the face of hate. We are able, if willing, to make every day feel like the first day of Spring.
“Bloom” well today and always. Shine your light and share your love. Appreciate and relish the time you have to be truly alive in the glory of God's creation.
