God's Other Ways

A SMALLER ME

In one of God’s Other Ways©, the Lord sometimes communicates to us through dreams. This is an account of a dream that Scott Monaco had a few days ago.

********

I dreamt this last night. I don’t remember the context, just the words; however they came to me in the dream. I’m starting to lose exactly how the words were said, but I remember the basic structure and general concept. It went something like:

“You don’t need a bigger Me. You need a less big you.”

I’m not sure if these words (as I am awake and typing them) were directly talking about God. But, it seems like they were.

The takeaway meaning here is that it is easy to think God isn’t powerful enough or capable or aware or interested or…we question His omnipotence, omnipresence, loving kindness and grace.

Yet, the issue isn’t with Him; it’s with us. We are often “too big” for Him to “be as big as He is” in our lives.

We let our pride, pursuit of full autonomy, attempt to achieve on our own, attempt to protect from negative consequences, etc—create a perceived bigness of self—which then diminishes our perception of God and a reduced ability to handle and/or overcome the issue(s) at hand.

It isn’t that He is not big enough for whatever issues we face. Rather, it is that we are not recognizing, and thus not relying upon and leveraging His bigness due to our wrong views of self and God.

It is like my pants.

I don’t need bigger pants. I need a smaller me. My pants are of a good size for my height (in fact, they’re too big for my height). My issue is that I’ve kept getting a bigger me, which has made my more-than-adequate-sized pants seem not big enough.

Or, it is like my bank account.

I don’t need more money. I need less spending and less desires to spend. My issue is that I keep making a bigger-spending me, which has made my more-than-adequate bank account seem not big enough. (Oh, this is a hard one to type! — I still “need” more money!)

The statement in my dream was actually very similarly said in the Bible by John the Baptist, “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” (John 3:30)

In this context, John was saying that his ministry was ultimately about pointing people to Christ. While he had gained many followers, they needed to become followers of Christ; otherwise they were wrongly focused and he had failed his ministry’s intent. He wasn’t there to make himself or his ministry look good, but to show and drive people to the goodness of the Lord.

The same thing applies with our lives. We aren’t here to make ourselves look good; but, rather to make ourselves less as we praise the goodness and greatness of the Lord so that we and others may know and be known by Him—the already bigger Him.

…Just some 3:45 am wake-up ramblings…

“Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.” Joel 2:28 NLT Old Testament

“‘And in the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.’ Acts 2:17 NLT (New Testament)

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT
